the main character in the story is woman in all black with the owl. She is the one who is fighting the other 3 sects of the masons by herself. During one of their battle she looses and eye and narrowly slips away into the woods where she is confronted by an owl who pulls out one of his eyes and offers it to her.
For the masons, perfect vision is very valued because of their admiration and worship for the "All Seeing Eye". That and also the Owl is a sacred a revered animal among the Masons because they believe it to hold the power of the all seeing eye. Thus, it is common and re-occuring symbol among the masons.
