These 2 woodland monochromatic scenes were done with both china marker and black ink.

...and inspired by the mystic forrest atmosphere conveyed in the work of Eyvind Earle.

...below, was made with felt markers at the Lilly Gardens of the Huntington Library in Pasadena, touched up with ball point pen and pastels afterward.

The Handi-Captain

I apologize in advance to anyone who is sensitive to making light of situations pertaining to the disabled, the Nazi's or being Canadian. i realize not everyone shares my sense of humor, but that's just part of growing up, right? So i say to you with utmost respect if you don't like it, no one is forcing you to read it.

I did some small guache paintings for a superhero i presented in my Superheros class at Calarts (critical studies?)

Henry Carpenter was an amazing Olympian in the event of horse vaulting at the 1936 Summer Olympics held in Berlin, Germany.
he went on to win the gold medal and put the rest of the aryan bastards to shame... and he did all this without use of his legs, because he is a paraplegic.
However, little did the public know that this was only scratching the surface of what was his true purpose,
for he is...

...the Handi-Captain. Sanctioned by the US government and provided with a special wheel chair that turns into a helicopter, his mission was to infiltrate Germany and kick Nazi ass from the inside out.
with help from partner, 4 gold medal winner, Jesse Owens. Code named "Fo-Mo", short for "Fastest Mutha F***er Alive!"

the war came to an end and the Handi-Captain and Fo-Mo returned home. Years went by and Jesse passed away

Henry Carpenter is now the Coach of the Track & Field team at Tom Jones High School.
...when one day are rare and tragic accident befalls his star athlete.
Henry discovers this was no accicent. It was the work of the 2nd coming of Adolf Hitler.
Henry explains to his student that the trap was intended for the Handi-Captain, not him and offers to train him in the ways of the Handi-Captain for a chance at vengence and stop 2nd Hitler.

...meanwhile, sinister plotting takes place in the shadows.

It is soon revealed that 2nd Hitler has been re-incarnated in the body of 12 year old Canadian girl, Alice Harring. Along side with malicious guidence from Joseph Goebbels, "the Canary of Chaos" re-incarnate.

the Nazi party has traded in their swastika arm bands for maple leafs. Alice and her "Menacing Mounties" plan to march on the U.S. but they are cut off at the Canadian border by the Handi-Captain and Apprentice. they do their final battle where the apprentice exacts his vengence, thus becoming a new Handi-Captain for a new tomorrow.

Sorry it's taken me so long to add another post, but its been rather hectic and stressful around here with everyone in a mad dash now to finish their films by April 20th, myself included.... However, here are some funny little caricature sketched i did of friends in my Steven Silver character design class a couple weeks ago.

...We started out the class by drawing a caricature of Mark Twain from the picture being projected, then, he set us loose on the rest of the class. i thought my Mark Twain ended up looking too much like Colonel Sanders, so i drew in a bucket of KFC Chicken. The other, with the enormous head phones, is of my good friend Eddie Moreno (sorry if i misspell your names, hooc'd on foneks F***ed me up!)

the guy on the left is the stoic Jee Yung Sang or Jee Yang Sung ( i can never remember) and the spaced out girl on the right is Jenessa(Jamocha, Jenssica?) Warren (oh yeah, some of these names are links in my right hand column to their own art blogs, so check'em out.)

On the left is one of my favorite experimental animation student, Kaitlin (silent "t") Chong. And the girl on the right is Cindey Chiang, aka: "CaChang!!!". Cindey was making the claim that it was simply impossible to draw her not cute.........Muahahahaha, CaChang!!!.

This stuck up drama queen is "Mi-Xin it up", Michelle Xin (Shin). she's really not snooty at all but she totally looks the part.

Now the bushy bright eyed girl on the right is, Jen Harlow(quin romance novel), devoted animator extraordinaire. On the left is two versions of my close friend Kristen "Campbell soup for tortured teenage soul" ( i know that one wasn't very clever, but then again she's a fragile mind, and i don't wanna be the one to push her over the edge...j/k)
...and if your noticing by now that most of these are of women, there weren't very many guys in class that night, or maybe i am just bias.....oh well.

On the left are two attempts of fellow Doc's Inn Pub Longshoreman, Jeff Rowe and in bottom corner his spring fling, Julia Shrednicki(drawn to actuation). Then, on the right is Noel Belknap and cube mascot, Rocket, his is more improvised cuz he wouldn't sit still.

Every year this time, The students of Character animation at Calarts are required to make a portfolio for the faculty to judge our progress and more importantly our financial aid for the following year based on what they're looking at.
for last year's portfolio i took the backs of two 18'x 24' drawing pads and duct taped them together to hold all my work inside.

...this year i'm still using the same one. but in an attempt to hide that fact i did paintings over it. (clever or lazy?)
On the cover i kinda "winged it" and ended up with a peacock/dragon breathing fire, i know, very strange.

...On the inside cover i had placed a dvd of my animation reel, and so then decided to incorporate it into the Croc-monster i painted trying to eat in.

Shane Prigmore & Shannon Tindle design lecture.

At Calarts for the last two fridays, we had Character Designers, Shane Prigmore and Shannon Tindle, come give a lecture on design and give us an assignment for the following week. Shane and Shannon had worked on the recently released stop motion animation, "Coraline", and talked about the process they went through to creating some of the characters in the film.

the assignment they gave us was to design the characters "Oliver, Dodger, and Fagin" from Dicken's classic novel "Oliver Twist"

On the second friday they came back to look at all the work from everyone who participated and then gave a personal and in depth critique to every individuals work.

My Process
in my thought process of creating these characters i used the description of them from the book to inspire and help me sketch out the feeling i wanted each one to have. For Fagin i really wanted to capture the look of a lizard or reptile given in the book's description. i also thought what if he was stroke victim so the left side of his face would droop down and he would drag his left leg. For Dodger i saw him as hideously ugly kid, one not even his own parents would love, hence being orphaned. Also i choose to use the books description of the hat barley resting on his head, to not even touching his head. Oliver i felt was always and victimized by-stander and i wanted to convey this with big doe eyes and a tiny little mouth to achieve an expression i thought fit my feeling. After the first impression i researched the clothing from early 19th century London. and then i went about drawing the characters into an overall look. i inked the sketched on watercolor paper and then used those sketches and my light table to water color the characters on a separate piece of paper. i then later joined the two in photoshop for the end result.

...as for their critique of my work they really loved my Dodger and the choice make him ugly as possible. They told me that my Fagin was too creature like and not enough human, which they went on to say may have just been the color choice, or to what i think is a portion of personal preference. Shane really liked the the feeling and face of my Oliver but said that the look of his clothing was too "Luke Skywalker" and encourage me to due more research on what he might actually where in that time period. i was totally satisfied with their the time and suggestions they gave us, and just grateful for the experience.

"A Night of EPIC Proportions!!!!"

this year i chose to make a piece on the spot for the annual Character Anim. gallery show. That didn't turn out to be on spot. I started a week of planning into the hanging up the piece and did tons of preliminary sketches before even attempting to create it a the size i wanted it to be. these are a couple of those sketches.

i had the help of my classmate, talented photographer and good friend, Jeff Rowe, take some picture of the final scale piece for my portfolio.

I drew up a christmas poster for our Character Animation department Holiday Party this year, and i ended up with something i really liked. i colored most of it with marker and colored pencil but it still looked like crap until i scanned it and photoshopped it up a whole bunch.

Beatrice O'Brady

...At age twenty-seven Beatrice Brady was recognized as the first female to become a US Marshal with her final capture of Jack O'lanturn himself. He was the only one of his men to ever go to trial, however the jury was never came to a verdict because he was found shot dead in his cell only after couple of days being in captivity

this is another layout i did of what would be a messy really run down one room apartment with just a sink and piping throughout the entire place, no shower . maybe a film idea? i'm still undecided on that.

the assignment for this was to draw a creature with a rhino's head, deer antlers, elephant ears, a giraffe's neck, a camel's body, with elephant legs for the front and zebra legs in the back.

New Style!

My friend Cole told me it would be funny to post these pictures saying that they were my latest work with this new i style i'd just adapted. The truth is these are still my pictures except that they're not at all new, these were done when i was 8 years old, back in 2nd grade, for my everyday class journal. I think they're pretty hilarious to look at and so has everyone else who has seen them.

The Masons Civil War

These next few were also done for my story class from Chong Lee. It is a story of the Masons and the different sects within them all at war in a giant struggle for power over the entire Masons.

the main character in the story is woman in all black with the owl. She is the one who is fighting the other 3 sects of the masons by herself. During one of their battle she looses and eye and narrowly slips away into the woods where she is confronted by an owl who pulls out one of his eyes and offers it to her.

For the masons, perfect vision is very valued because of their admiration and worship for the "All Seeing Eye". That and also the Owl is a sacred a revered animal among the Masons because they believe it to hold the power of the all seeing eye. Thus, it is common and re-occuring symbol among the masons.

Story Assignment from Chong

These next few drawings were done for my story class. We were asked to create two characters and draw them in numerous actions to show their story.

First I created "Redford Johnson" aka "Ol' Red Long Johns". He's best described as the town troublemaker, always just in his red long underwear. He has a bum leg so he uses an oversized pistol tied to his leg as a crutch.

the Other is Sheriff Soaring Eagle. He's lived a sheltered life growing up on the reservation. He went into town looking for work and wound up getting the job of Sheriff, thanks to Ol' Red no one else wants it. Soaring Eagle is a different kind of sherff. He is so tough he pins his badge directly on his skin. Through their differences they seem to find a type of middle ground that they can get along on and they became a kind of odd couple.
